Start with a small, reachable target
An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected expenses such as a car repair, medical bill, or short gap in income. Many people begin with a modest starter goal—enough to cover a few essential costs—then grow toward a larger cushion that matches their household risk and income stability.
Automate what you can
Treat savings like a bill. Schedule a recurring transfer on payday, even if the amount is small. Separating emergency savings from everyday spending accounts can reduce the temptation to use the funds for non-emergencies.
Replenish after you use it
Using the fund for a true emergency is the point of having one. Afterward, rebuild with a temporary boost to transfers or a short spending pause so the cushion is ready for the next surprise.
