Estimate future spending, not just savings totals

Retirement readiness starts with a picture of housing, health care, food, transportation, and lifestyle costs. Your target savings depend on when you stop working, other income sources, and how long you expect retirement to last.

Inventory every source of retirement income

List workplace plans, IRAs, taxable savings, pensions if any, and estimated Social Security benefits. Understanding the mix helps you see gaps and decide whether to increase contributions, adjust timing, or reduce future expenses.

Revisit the plan as life changes

Job changes, health events, caregiving, and market conditions can shift your timeline. Periodic check-ins keep assumptions realistic and help you adjust contributions or spending plans before small gaps become large ones.
